When you accept yourself and treat yourself with kindness, it affects almost everything in your life: your relationships, your decisions, your boundaries, and even how you feel when you look at yourself in the mirror in the morning.

And yet, even though self-love is so essential, many of us struggle with it.
We’re used to being hard on ourselves and constantly comparing. Often, we only feel worthy when we perform, function, or please others.

Pay attention to how you talk to yourself.

Would you speak to your friends the same way?
Probably not.

If you often criticize yourself, try to counter that inner voice by replacing negative thoughts with more supportive ones.

Speak to yourself in a way that lifts you up instead of tearing you down.

Be your own friend. You deserve understanding and love, especially from yourself.

Often, you only realize how strong your inner critic is when you start paying attention to it.

2. Set boundaries

Saying no is an act of self-care.

It means respecting your own needs and priorities, and protecting your energy and well-being.

And yes, I know — this can feel really hard at the beginning.

If you’re used to adapting to others, you first have to relearn how to listen to yourself.

Some people might be surprised or even irritated when you start saying no, simply because they’re not used to it.

But don’t let that stop you.

The more you listen to your needs and set clear boundaries, the easier it becomes — and you’ll start to feel so much freer.

3. Surround yourself with positive people

The people around you have a huge impact on how you see yourself and how you feel.

Try to surround yourself with people who support you, inspire you, and genuinely feel good to be around — not those who constantly criticize or bring you down.

You deserve relationships where you feel valued and supported.

Of course, distancing yourself from negative influences can be difficult, especially when it comes to long-term friendships or even family.

But ask yourself honestly:
Do I feel energized or drained after spending time with this person?

The people who are truly good for you will make you feel like you are enough, just as you are.

The more consciously you choose your environment, the more you’ll notice how positively it affects your life.

4. Take time for yourself

For a long time, I believed I had to constantly achieve something to be worthy.

Doing nothing?
Taking time just for myself?

That felt like wasting time.

But it’s actually so important.

And no, I don’t mean endless scrolling or binge-watching shows (even though that’s okay sometimes — if it’s intentional).

I mean real “me time”:
a walk outside, a short meditation, cooking something nice for yourself, or trying a hobby just for fun — without needing to be perfect at it.

Take that time. You’ll feel the difference.

5. Let go of perfectionism

Ah, perfectionism… something I know very well.

For a long time, I wanted to do everything perfectly, always give my best — but deep down, it often came from insecurity. I wanted to prove to myself (and others) that I was good enough.

But when you truly love yourself, you don’t need to be perfect.

You know you’re allowed to make mistakes and still be worthy.

Don’t forget: you’re allowed to be a beginner.

I had to learn that too — and no, it didn’t happen overnight. It’s a process.
But today, I’m much kinder to myself than I used to be.

So remind yourself: you are enough, exactly as you are.

6. Take care of your body

Self-care starts with your body.

I personally love taking time for self-care — spa days are a must for me.

Taking care of yourself, feeling good in your body — it really makes a difference.

But even small things like getting enough sleep, eating well, or simply taking a deep breath can have a huge impact.

Your body carries you through life. Treat it with love.

7. Be patient with yourself

Oh, patience… definitely not my biggest strength.

When I have a new idea, I want results immediately. I’ve gotten a bit better at it over time — but it’s still something I’m working on.

When you learn something new, you won’t be perfect right away — and that’s completely okay.

Focus on your progress, not on what you haven’t achieved yet.

Be kind to yourself, just like you would be with a good friend.

And yes, you can learn patience too.
The only thing you need for that is… patience. (I know, ironic.)

Remind yourself of what you’ve already achieved.
What makes you who you are.
What your strengths are.

Write down your successes and strengths — even the small ones count.

We’re often much harder on ourselves than necessary.

But you are so much more than you sometimes believe.

So celebrate yourself. You deserve it.
