How to Become the Best Version of Yourself
Everyone has an idea of who they want to become. The best version of themselves.
Yet we are often held back by deeply rooted beliefs that unconsciously prevent us from reaching our full potential.
You might recognize that quiet voice in your mind that makes you doubt yourself or holds you back, even though you know you want more.
This is exactly where change begins.
In this article, you’ll learn how to recognize these blocks and gradually move closer to the version of yourself you want to be.
1. Define your best self: Who do you want to be?
Before you can grow into your full potential, it’s important to become clear about what your best self actually looks like.
Often, we only have a vague idea of who we want to be. We think about it, but rarely take the time to define it more clearly.
And this is exactly where change begins.
Ask yourself:
- How do I want to feel?
- What values are important to me?
- Which qualities do I want to bring more into my life?
It’s not enough to simply say, “I want to become the best version of myself.”
You need to actively engage with that version.
Imagine you were already living that life.
- How would you think?
- How would you act?
- What habits would you have?
These are questions I come back to regularly in my daily life:
What would my best self do right now?
How would my best self think?
Take time for this process.
Personally, I enjoy it because I notice how my thinking begins to shift.
Journaling can also help you create a clearer image. Write down how your best self lives, feels, and makes decisions.
The clearer this picture becomes, the easier it is to align your actions with it.
2. Understand your beliefs: What is holding you back?
Our beliefs often develop early in life through experiences, our environment, and the people around us.
Some of them support us, while others limit us.
You might recognize thoughts like:
- I’m not good enough
- I’ll never make it
- I can’t do this
- I’m not smart enough
- I’m not allowed to make mistakes
- Success is difficult
- Change is hard
These are just a few examples of beliefs that can become deeply ingrained.
What’s important to understand is this:
These are not facts. They are thoughts you’ve learned.
And because you learned them, you can also change them.
Start by becoming aware of your thoughts.
How do you speak to yourself?
Which thoughts keep coming back?
Do they support you, or do they hold you back?
Ask yourself:
Is this really true?
Where does this thought come from?
Is there any evidence against it?
Take your time with this.
This kind of reflection isn’t always easy, but it’s an important step if you truly want to create change.
3. Shift your beliefs to align with your best self
Once you’ve recognized your beliefs, you can begin to change them consciously.
Your best self is not created through one big decision, but through the thoughts you repeat daily.
Instead of thinking:
“I’m not good enough.”
→ “I am growing and learning.”
“I’ll never make it.”
→ “I can develop the skills I need.”
What matters is that your new thoughts feel believable to you.
If the step from “I’m not good enough” to “I am confident” feels too big, try something more realistic like “I am enough.”
This is not about forcing yourself to believe something.
It’s about gradually shifting your thoughts.
Repetition plays an important role here.
Your brain adapts to what you think regularly. Over time, new connections are formed, and new thoughts start to feel more natural.
You can support this by writing your thoughts down or saying them out loud.
4. Take realistic steps toward your best self
Becoming the best version of yourself does not happen overnight. Give yourself time and try to enjoy the process instead of overwhelming yourself with a big goal.
Start with small, manageable steps, and be proud of yourself. The fact that you are willing to grow and reflect is already a big step.
- Set clear and realistic goals: Which areas of your life do you want to improve?
- Start with small changes: Every step counts.
- Be patient with yourself: Personal growth is a process, not a competition.
Write down three small things you can do today to move closer to your goal.
5. Surround yourself with positivity and inspiration
Your environment has a strong influence on your personal growth. Try to surround yourself with people who support and uplift you instead of bringing you down.
People with a positive mindset.
One thing I’ve noticed on my own journey is that when you start working on your thoughts and your mindset, your environment often begins to change naturally.
You become more aware of what drains your energy. Negative conversations or constant complaining may start to feel uncomfortable.
Over time, you may find that certain people or situations naturally become less present in your life.
That’s a normal part of growth.
You can also find inspiration through:
- books
- podcasts
- conversations
- content that supports your mindset
The more you surround yourself with positive influences, the more you grow in that direction.
6. Setbacks are part of the process
There will be days when you doubt yourself or feel like you’re not making progress.
That’s part of the process.
In those moments, it can feel like you’re failing.
But if you think about it: Would your best self really give up because of a setback?
Probably not.
Setbacks are not a sign of failure. They are part of growth.
They show you where you are and what you can still learn.
What matters is not whether setbacks happen, but how you respond to them.
Stay consistent, even when it doesn’t feel perfect.
7. Take action: Your best self is created through action
You can reflect, plan, and think as much as you want.
Real change happens when you take action.
Many people stay in the thinking phase for too long. They know what they want to change, but don’t actually act on it.
You might recognize this pattern.
Take a moment to reflect:
- What fears might be holding me back?
- Are there beliefs that are stopping me?
- Do I truly believe I can change?
Once you become aware of these thoughts, you can begin to question them.
And then comes the most important part:
Taking action.
Because your best self is not created through thoughts alone, but through what you actually do.
Your best self starts today
There is no perfect moment to begin.
And there is no reason to wait until you feel ready.
Growth often begins when you step slightly outside your comfort zone and allow yourself to try something new.
Be patient with yourself. Appreciate your progress, even in small steps, and stay open to the process.
You already have everything within you to become the best version of yourself.
Sometimes it’s not about becoming someone new, but about allowing yourself to grow into who you already are.
